Sarasota's 99 Bottle Run Club

If you’re on the hunt for the perfect blend of hops and health, reserve your Wednesday plans for Downtown Sarasota.
September 9, 2024

Calling all beer enthusiasts and fitness fanatics: If you’re on the hunt for the perfect blend of hops and health, reserve your Wednesday plans for Downtown Sarasota. 99 Bottles Taproom & Bottle Shop offers more than just an incredible selection of craft beers; it’s also home to the popular Run99! 5K, is an invigorating weekly event that gets your heart pumping and ends with a well-earned pint.

A Community in Motion

Downtown residents and business owners alike praise 99 Bottles owner, Mark Tuchman, for bringing life to Second Street. Every Wednesday at 6:00 pm, even with temperatures soaring to near 90 degrees, about 60 people gather outside the bar dressed in neon sports gear, ready to tackle the heat. Led by bar manager Dylan Hauri, who keeps the tone light with reminders like “This is a fun run. I don’t give a [care] about your P.R.,” the group sets off for a 5K route towards the John Ringling Bridge, passing Sarasota landmarks like Selby Public Library.

The route offers a refreshing view of downtown streets and bayfront parks—a nice break from the treadmill grind. Participants, regardless of their pace, experience the thrill of group camaraderie and the reward of a complimentary Liquid Death water (or a pint of beer if there are leftover kegs!) at the finish line.

Run99: More Than Just a Workout

The appeal of Run99 isn’t just the exercise—it’s the community. As runners return from the 5K, sweaty but satisfied, they gather outside 99 Bottles, filling the picnic tables and sharing laughs. “People stay after they run their 5K,” Hauri says. “They hang out for two to three hours, which is great for business and great for the community. These people want to spend time together.”

This sense of connection is exactly why many people attend. Meg Sanders, a first-time participant, says, “When you go to the gym, you get in the zone and don’t typically speak to other people. Run club is the opposite. It encourages you to socialize, meet new people, and even grab a beer together afterward.”

For newcomers to Sarasota, Run99 offers a way to integrate into the city’s social scene. Many have even nicknamed it Sarasota’s “new dating app,” as participants often meet new friends and, occasionally, romantic partners.

Aldo Mariano Castro, who was initially hesitant to run in the Florida heat, now enjoys attending Run99 regularly. “No matter what kind of runner you are, everybody is welcome,” he says. “I love seeing people of all ages and backgrounds coming together and being active.”

From Four Runners to a Community Phenomenon

Run99’s roots trace back to a time when the concept of blending fitness with craft beer was still novel. Tuchman first introduced the idea at Mr. Beery’s, his previous bar, and started with just four runners. Fast forward to November 2022, when he brought the concept to 99 Bottles, and the run has since grown to as many as 120 participants on any given week.

Regulars like Karissa Escobosa, who joined the run to meet new people after moving to Sarasota, say it’s become a highlight of their week. “I always leave with my cup so full,” she says, “It’s for sure the highlight of my week.”

A Growing Success

As the club continues to thrive, plans are underway to expand its offerings with more community-focused active events. Downtown Sarasota is buzzing again, and it’s thanks in large part to this incredible, inclusive initiative.

If you’re looking for a fun way to stay active and meet new people, whether you’re a seasoned runner or a casual stroller, the 99 Bottles Run Club is for you. Lace-up those running shoes, grab a cold one, and let Run99 get you over the hump of your midweek slump. With scenic routes, great company, and a vibrant post-run atmosphere, this is more than just a workout—it’s a way to connect and be part of something special.
